Vining Sparks Survey Shows Continued Improvement for Banks
The January 2014 Vining Sparks Bank Survey shows continued improvement in the outlook for community bankers. Conducted between Jan. 28 and Jan. 31 the survey includes responses from 366 bankers located in all 12 Fed regions.
 
A Few Survey Highlights
Community bankers are notably more optimistic about loan growth, with 66 percent more net respondents expecting loans to grow in the next 12 months, an increase of 9 percent from the October survey.
  • The number one cause of concern for loan growth is lack of demand, cited by 75 percent of respondents, down from 78 percent in the October survey.
  • Over half of survey respondents now cite regulatory requirements as an obstacle to loan growth, up 14 percent, quarter over quarter.
  • Net 23 percent of respondents expect profitability to improve this year, up 5.7 percent, quarter over quarter.
  • The regulatory environment is cited by 80 percent of survey respondents as a concern for profitability, by far the most often-cited concern; and
  • Survey respondents have a clear bias to yields moving gradually higher over the next year.
